This is first part in the “Install Symfony 2 development environment on windows” series.
For part 4 – configuring php click here.
For part 3 – configuring apache and installing composer click here.
For part 2 – installing xampp click here.

I remember chatting on IRC with Tobias Sjösten (@tobiassjosten) one of the founders of  a while back and he told me that there where some difficulties in getting working  Symfony 2 development environment up on windows machines at one of their meetings. So since I have re installed windows my computer I thought that I might as well create a step by step guide of how to do it.

In this guide we will
Install git
Install xammp

So let us get started:

Install Git

My preferred way of installing git is to install it through a package called Git Extentions it has the following features:

  • Windows Explorer intergration for Git
  • Visual Studio (2005/2008/2010/2012) plugin for Git
  • Feature rich user interface for Git
  • Single installer installs MSysGit, GitExtensions and the mergetool KDiff3
  • 32bit and 64bit support

So head over to and download the latest version. Run the installer

Click next.

Here you can choose if you want to install Git Extentions just for your user or for all users on your computer. In this guide we will stick with the default option, to install it for all users. Click next.

Select both MySysGit and KDIff and click next.

Click next.

Click next.

Click next.

Click install and sit back and enjoy the installation. After a while you will see this screen:

Click I Agree (if you do). Then just keep the defaults and click next for a couple of screens and then install it.

After kdiff is installed it is the Git installation:

Click next. Read through the licence and click next again.

Leave the default options and click next.

Leave the default options and click next.

Leave the default options and click next and wait for the installation to finish.

There.. installation done!

Nice tutorial George. But people like also need to get git, composer, php etc set up properly (for any development enviroment) in my oppinion. Setting up an project in the IDE is the small thing
